3 Reasons to Stay Local in Bangkok

These three authentic Thailand adventures will deliver the goods when you stay in an independent boutique hotel in Bangkok.

An upcoming vacation in Southeast Asia may conjure thoughts of tropical fruit, beautiful beaches and fragrant rice dishes. In addition to the lush views you’ve seen on postcards, staying local in Bangkok offers culture, food, and artistic and architectural experiences you just can’t find anywhere else.

If you’re looking to see another side of Thailand’s capital and most populous city, try adding these items to your Bangkok to-do list.

Visit a movie theatre. No, really.

You might not be expecting to fly across an ocean to go to the movies, but the Thai movie experience is completely different than your traditional multiplex. For as little as $20, you will be treated to a luxury experience with plush, couch-like seats – no sticky soda spills here.

Movie theatres in Thailand have waiter service and often have unlimited food and drinks brought to your seat during the movie.

Another aspect you won’t get at home? Before every screening, Thai theatres play the King’s anthem and everyone stands as the song plays with a slideshow. It’s a great way to see how everyday experiences are different in other parts of the world.

For something different than your traditional art museum, fans of the strange can take in the Siriraj Medical Museum. The six permanent collections in the museum feature subjects like congenital diseases, forensic pathology, and Thai traditional medicine. The museum features strange specimens of all shapes and sizes and even the mummified remains of a convicted serial killer.

Keeping with the morbid theme, the Bangkok Corrections Museum is located on the grounds of a former maximum-security prison. Exhibits feature graphic descriptions of how prisoners were treated when the prison was in operation, with artifacts and displays. If that’s too creepy for you, the grounds of the prison have since been turned into a public park.

Eat authentic Thai street food.

There’s so much more to Thai cuisine than the pad thai and curry of American takeout. Local food hawkers in Bangkok, with their small street side carts, are a great way to try many different types of food without investing a lot of time or money.

For refreshment from a hot Thai day, try cha yen, a strong-brewed black tea mixed with sweetened condensed milk. Mataba, a flatbread fried and stuffed with beef or poultry, makes a great breakfast or snack. Chin ping, meatballs skewered with bamboo, grilled over charcoal and served with sweet chili dipping sauce, is another popular option. For dessert, try tubtim krob, a popular Thai sweet made with water chestnut, tapioca flour, coconut milk and flake ice.
