San Antonio:

San Antonio’s revs up for the holiday season the day after Thanksgiving and has tons of festive activities that the whole family will enjoy.

  • The famous Riverwalk lights up with over 122,000-holiday lights until the beginning of January. Thankfully the weather in San Antonio is mild during this time so grab a bite to eat at one of the outdoor cafés and enjoy the thousands of colorful lights.
  • Head over to the San Antonio Zoo for the annual Zoo Lights tradition and sip hot cocoa, stroll amongst twinkling lights, and even roast some smores.
  • Enjoy the holiday classic ballet, The Nutcracker, which comes to town every year at the Tobin Center for Performing Arts.

Leavenworth, WA:

Located just outside of Seattle this cute Bavarian-themed town is the perfect place to escape for the winter. The whole town transforms into a winter wonderland blanketed in snow and glittering lights and offers tons of fun holiday events.

  • The Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum is a unique site to see. The museum holds George and Arlene Wagner’s private collection which includes over 6,000 handmade nutcrackers from all over the world.
  • The authentic Christkindlmarkt reflects the open-air markets that are popular throughout Germany. The market is filled with Bavarian goods including nutcrackers, cuckoo clocks, glass-blown ornaments and more. Don’t forget to grab a cup of gluhwein, a hot spiced wine that is a true German tradition.
  • Your trip to Leavenworth wouldn’t be complete without a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the town. Catch one at a local farm or in town at the front street. If you really want to get fancy, call over to Icicle Outfitters and Guides which will plan your sleigh ride for you and bring along cider, coffee, and hot chocolate before taking you on a scenic ride along the Icicle River which offers jaw-dropping views of the Stuart Mountain Range.
